<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate transfer apparatus capable of suppressing power consumption during normal operation of a component mounting line. <P>SOLUTION: A control device 90 makes both side fringes of a top face of a substrate P abut on clamp parts 15b and 16b of first and second rails 15 and 16 by raising a backup plate 83 of a backup device 80 to clamp them, and then turns off excitation of a width change driving motor 71 for driving a width change mechanism 72 of a width change device 70. Thereby, the substrate P clamped by the first and second rails 15 and 16 acts as a beam, and even if excitation of the width change driving motor 71 is turned off, the first and second rails 15 and 16 are not moved by mechanical vibration or the like, and the positioning state of the substrate P can be maintained.
