The fence assembly comprises: a number of uprights 12 upstanding from the ground; fence panels 14 between pairs of uprights and a number of impact absorbing arrangements 24. The impact arrangements are mountable with an elongate member to extend between a pair of adjacent panels and through an upright so as to be slidably movable relative to the respective upright. The absorbing arrangement may include resilient rubber energy absorbing members 28 engageable against an upright if the elongate member moves from a rest position. The fence panels may be mountable to the uprights and a mounting member is provided to fail upon a significant collision impact attack ram. The elongate members may extend through L shaped openings in the uprights and in use locate above fence panel components. The fence panels may comprise elongate horizontal cross members with a number of pales mounted vertically to them.
