An apparatus and method of transporting cargo are disclosed. The method of providing package shipment by a package shipper includes providing options for a shipment route, including at least one portion of the shipment route being air cargo, and comprises receiving, via a communications network, from a package shipping customer at a consignee terminal, input data including at least an origin, a destination and a latest time for delivery for a package; determining, in a computing device, a first optimized list of alternative shipment routes, for shipping the package; providing the list to the customer via the communications network; receiving from the customer a selection of one of the shipment routes; and transporting the package from the origin to the destination via the selected shipment route. In alternative embodiments, the list of shipment routes is provided together with a list of a plurality of additional optimization criteria, and a selection from the customer of one of the additional optimization criteria from the list is used to prepare, in the computing device, a further optimized list of alternative shipment routes from which the customer may select a preferred shipment route. The list of optimization criteria may include at least price, time of delivery and greenness.
