<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow area detection that has strong resistance against halation to be realized. <P>SOLUTION: According to one embodiment, an area detecting device comprises: contour line extracting means; light/dark determining means; changing point detecting means; contour line correcting means; and area acquiring means. The contour line extracting means extracts a series of contour pixels from an input image for each contour line. The light/dark determining means determines light/dark whether each contour pixel constituting the series of contour pixels extracted is light or dark in comparison with a pixel in a predetermined area. The changing point detection means detects a changing point that changes on a contour line to which the light/dark determined corresponds from the series of contour pixels. The contour line correcting means acquires a series of contour pixels that constitutes the contour line corrected by re-connecting contour lines that correspond thereto at the changing point detected.
