The method involves providing fresh air under charging pressure by a compressor (62) of a charging device (6). An internal combustion engine (2) is operated in an air-guided operating mode and a fuel-guided operating mode e.g. lean-burn operating mode or stratified mode. A determination is made whether a change of desired driving torque, which leads to an unstable operation range of the compressor, is required in the air-guided operating mode. The internal combustion engine is operated in the fuel-guided operating mode when the change of the desired driving torque is determined.
