The repeater (1) has a transmitter (9) for transmitting a signal to a network terminal (5A) of a radio transmission network. A sensor (11) i.e. brightness sensor, detects an up-link signal of the network terminal in the form of switch signal. A control unit (13) switches the transmitter between passive- and active operating conditions based on the switch signal. Transmission power of the transmitter in the passive operating condition is smaller than the transmission power of the transmitter in the active operating condition. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a repeater for a radio transmission network.
