PURPOSE: A backing material for EGW(Electro Gas Welding) and a method for increasing the cooling speed of a weld zone using the same are provided to improve the cooling speed of a back weld zone by inserting the square column-type ceramic backing material between the groove faces at the backside of a base material. CONSTITUTION: A backing material for EGW comprises a body part(110) inserted between groove faces at the backside of a base material, first and second hole parts(120,130) which are formed lengthwise inside the body part to let cooling water in and out, a cooling water inlet valve(140) which is connected to the first hole part at the bottom of the body part to draw cooling water into the body part, a cooling water outlet valve(150) which is connected to the second hole part at the bottom of the body part to discharge cooling water, and a connection pipe(160) which is connected to the first and second hole parts at the top of the body part and circulates cooling water inside the body part to discharge the cooling water; drawn in through the cooling water inlet valve and through the cooling water outlet.
