The device has pads (26) deactivated for attaching the device to a drain pipe (100), and a pulley (72) for receiving a hose (102). A motor rotates the pulley so that the rotation modifies the height of a free end of the hose in the pipe. A pedal controls the rotation of the pulley, and a coupling member includes rollers (82) movable between positions moved towards and away from the pulley, so as to exert variable pressure of the hose on the pulley, where the pulley permits lowering of the free end of the hose under the effect of gravity when the motor is stopped. An independent claim is also included for an assembly for cleaning a drain pipe in a building.
