The internal combustion engine has a cylinder housing (10), in which a cylinder (12) is formed. A piston (14) is movably guided within the cylinder in axial direction. An injection valve (22) is provided for introducing a gaseous fuel. The injection valve opens laterally in the cylinder. The injection valve opens in the lower half, particularly in lower third of the piston stroke path in the cylinder. A cylinder head (20) of the internal combustion engine forms a flat cylinder closure.
