PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic still camera which can select a suitable shutter chance according to the status of a subject. SOLUTION: The electronic still camera is provided with an eye open/close detector 24 for detecting an eye opening/closing action state in a subject, a wink determiner 26 for determining the presence or absence of an eye's wink action on the basis of the opening/closing action state detected by the eye open/close detector 24 and generating a wink output when the eye open/close detector determines a wink action, an automatic photographing part 21 for automatically photographing the subject according to the wink output of the wink determiner 26, and a delay/non-delay mode setter 41 for selectively setting a delay mode in which automatic photographing is carried out after a predetermined delay time from the generation of the wink output and a non-delay mode in which automatic photographing is carried out without the predetermined delay time from the generation of the wink output.
