A belt-shaped region (32a) in which the flake graphite is concentrated is formed in the microporous layer (32) so as to extend in a substantially parallel direction to the joining interface (31a) between the gas diffusion layer substrate (31) and the microporous layer (32). As a result, it is possible to balance the dry-out resistance and flooding resistance of the gas diffusion layer, which are conventionally in a trade-off relationship with one another, and to improve the performance of a solid polymer fuel cell.
