The present invention relates to a barrier system 2. The barrier system includes a first, outer barrier member 4 and at least a second, inner barrier member 6. At least part of the inner barrier is located in an interior cavity of the outer barrier. The outer barrier may include an elongate aperture or slot 26 that allows the inner barrier to move within the slot following impact of an object vehicle or person with the barrier system. The outer barrier may slidably move relative to the interior barrier following impact. The barrier members may be located on a base, the outer barrier may move relative to the base during an impact.
