<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for processing a highlight area and a saturation area in a digital image. <P>SOLUTION: A method for carrying out restoration of a highlight in the digital image includes a step of comparing pixels in the image with a saturation level value so as to identify a pixel having got saturated. A saturation map of pixels having got saturated is generated. Only when at least one color channel of a pixel is not saturated, the selected individual saturated pixels are identified as restorable pixels. For each restorable pixel, a group of closest unsaturated pixels on up, down, left, and right sides of a selected saturated pixel is identified. A substitute pixel value is generated for each saturated color channel of the restorable pixels using a combination of pixel values of unsaturated color channels of the restorable pixels and pixel values of corresponding color channels of nearby unsaturated pixels. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
