<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide side chain substituted alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and a method for producing the same having excellent solubility to organic solvents with low boiling point and serving as a monomer capable of giving a polyimide capable of developing a high tilt angle of a liquid crystal alignment film. <P>SOLUTION: The side chain substituted alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is prepared by introducing a side chain substituent to a bicyclooctane ring of bicyclo[3.3.0]octane-2,4,6,8-tetracarboxylic acid-2:4,6:8-dianhydride and is represented by formula [1]. In the formula, R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>is a 1-20C alkyl group or a cyanoalkyl group.
