CARBON-FIBER-REINFORCED PLASTIC AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING SAME

A carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic prepared by impregnating a sheet-like base composed of discontinuous carbon fibers with a matrix resin, wherein the content ratio of carbon fibers having lengths of 10 mm or longer in the sheet-like base is 60 wt% or more relative to the total amount of the carbon fibers and the average value of the orientation degrees of the carbon fibers contained in the base is 2-10; and a process for producing the carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, wherein the formation of the sheet-like base is performed by carding. In the sheet-like base which is not impregnated yet, proper anisotropy is intentionally imparted to the discontinuous carbon fibers in such a manner that the average value of the orientation degrees of the discontinuous carbon fibers falls within a predetermined range. Therefore, it becomes possible to produce a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic having excellent mechanical properties using a smaller amount of the carbon fibers while maintaining the shape formability of the sheet-like base and the moldability into the carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic satisfactorily.
