The method involves generating a torque for acceleration or deceleration of an industrial truck using the driving current for an electric traction drive (2). The radius (r) of a non-driven vehicle wheel (5) and a driven vehicle wheel (6) is determined and the vehicle speed is controlled with respect to the vehicle reference speed in dependence on a comparison of the rotational speeds of the non-driven vehicle wheel and driven vehicle wheel. An independent claim is included for industrial truck.
