The viscosity of solutions of rubber, or of guttapercha, balata and the like, is reduced by treating the rubber or similar substance with a sulphuric acid before, during or after the dissolution or swelling, at a moderate temperature, e.g. 50 DEG C. The proportion of sulphuric acid may be between 0,1 and 3,5 per cent by weight of the rubber. Solvents mentioned are carbon tetrachloride, o-dichlorbenzene, chlorobenzene, xylene, toluene, and benzene. The acid may be p-toluent, - ethane-, benzene, xylene, cymol-, nitrobenzene or nitrochlorobenzene sulphinic acid. Examples are given. |
