PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus and a color registration compensating method are provided to detect surface state defect section of image forming medium in an operation for setting up light emitting amount of a registration sensor. CONSTITUTION: In case color registration is needed, a control unit sets up optimal luminescence amount of a registration sensor about rotation surface of the image forming medium(S1010,S1020). The control unit confirms the surface condition defect section of the image forming medium(S1030). If the optimal light emitting amount is set up, the control unit performs color registration correction(S1040).
