The unit (10) has an image detection region (26) associated to a camera (24) e.g. charge coupled device camera. Position markings e.g. numbers, are attached on a lower side (28) of an operating element (20) e.g. rotary actuator, where the side faces towards the camera. The markings are provided over a sub region of a path within the image detection region, where the path is covered during movement of the operating element. An evaluating unit (36) determines an actual moving position of the operating element by processing an image of the markings, where the image is recorded by the camera.
