574,272. Rubber substitutes. WALLERSTEINER, K. Sept. 15, 1942, No. 13026. [Class 91] A rubber-like product is prepared from castor oil or decomposition products thereof by heating the oil at pressures below 10mm. of mercury at progressively increasing temperatures, e.g., up to 350‹C., such that decomposition of the ricinoleic or ricinolenic acids take place with evolution of acrolein, steam, and heptaldehyde, and transforming the sol thus formed into a rubbery gel by continued heating with exclusion of air or oxygen. Metallic magnesium or sodium may be employed to accelerate the polymerization, while organic peroxides may be employed to inhibit or retard polymerization. The product is a pale yellow rubber-like solid. According to the Provisional Specification such rubber-like products may also be prepared from acids of 10 to 12 carbon atoms having an unsaturated linkage in the y position.
