PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to suppress an occurrence of a flicker even if an image for adjustment is not displayed.

SOLUTION: An optical sensor 71 detects brightness of a display panel 10. A control circuit 52 detects the brightness of the display panel 10 from a signal S1 output from the optical sensor 71 and obtains a difference between an effective voltage when a pixel holds a positive polarity voltage and an effective voltage when the pixel holds a negative polarity voltage from a signal obtained by cutting a DC component of the signal S1 by a capacitor 72. The control circuit 52 controls a voltage applied to a counter electrode such that the difference between the effective voltages becomes smaller when the difference between the effective voltages becomes equal to or larger than a threshold value.
