DETERMINING A NUMBER OF OBJECTS IN IR IMAGE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for determining the number of objects in an IR image obtained by an IR imaging system.

SOLUTION: The method comprises: collecting a total of N intensity values for each pixel in an IR image using an IR imaging system comprising an IR detection device and an IR Illuminator; retrieving intensity values estimated for a plurality of known materials such as skin and hair from a database; determining a classification for each pixel in the IR image using one of a best fitting method of a reflectance and a correlation method; and determining a total number of objects in the IR image based upon the pixel classifications. The method is employed in determining the number of occupants in a motor vehicle moving on an HOV/HOT lane.
