In a fluid treatment of filamentary material, liquid or gas is passed through a pipe 6, Fig. 1, into a housing 4 to be applied to filamentary material F which is passed in a helical path around a reel 3 and is thrown out by centrifugal action from the latter to be deflected by the inner surface 7 of the housing 4 back to the advancing thread. The treating fluid is collected eventually in channels 8 at each end of the housing 4 and may be recirculated through pipes 10 via a pump to the pipe 6. In modified apparatus, the reel and housing may be mounted vertically, and/or the housing may comprise a number of inlet and collecting grooves by means of which a plurality of treating fluids may be applied to the thread at different zones of the reel.
