The method involves displaying captured infrared image on display area and complementary area of display unit (9). The complementary area is divided into segments. A criterion is defined in data processing unit (10), in which point or area of infrared image is recorded. The point or area of IR image for which defined criterion is met is determined and image positions are marked. The information which designates segment identifying image positions is displayed, when determined image position is located outside the display area. An independent claim is included for thermal imaging camera.
