<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal improving usability of a character input, in which a user can input a Kana character when having erroneously inputted a character in a number input mode with the intention of inputting it in a Kanji input mode. <P>SOLUTION: A character input device to which at least a number can be inputted, comprises: an input section for accepting a user input; a control section for determining a current input mode; a storage section for, when the current input mode is a number input mode, storing determination rules for determining whether to display conversion candidates for the inputted character string; a character string analysis section for analyzing the character string inputted from the input section to determine whether to display the conversion candidates; and a display section for displaying the conversion candidates when the character string analysis section determines to display the conversion candidates.
