<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system having a high resolution, being adaptable for wide-angle photography with a field angle of 72° or more at a wide angel end regardless of a small size, and having a comparatively large zoom ratio of approximately three times or more; an imaging device including the zoom lens system; and a compact camera equipped with the imaging device. <P>SOLUTION: A zoom lens system has a plurality of lens groups configured with at least one lens element; and is composed of a first lens group having negative power, a second lens group having positive power, a third lens group having negative power, and a forth lens group having positive power in order from an object side to an image side. The first lens group moves along an optical axis when zooming from a wide angle end to a telephoto end during imaging. The second leng group is made by disposing a lens element having positive power, a lens element having negative power, and a lens element having positive power in order from the object side to the image side while keeping an air interval.
