An optical element having first and second microlens arrays in each of which a plurality of microlenses is arranged. The first and second microlens arrays are disposed opposite to each other with a gap therebetween, the gap having a greater distance than the focal distance of the microlenses arranged in the first microlens array. The first microlens array is disposed on the light-incident side of the second microlens array. The interval between the microlenses arranged in the first microlens array is configured to be narrower than the interval between the microlenses arranged in the second microlens array. The optical element can appropriately suppress the occurrence of excess bright-dot pixels.
