PURPOSE: A positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery is provided to have low cost, to have high discharging capacity and to be useful for a high power battery. CONSTITUTION: A positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery comprises secondary particles in which primary particles of a nickel-based compound is assembled. If the average particle diameter of the positive electrode active material is 5.5-7.5 micron, a specific surface is 0.4-2.0 m/g. If the average particle diameter of the positive electrode active material is 11-13 micron, a specific surface area is 0.15-1.0 m^2/g. Among the primary particles, a pore channel exists. A lithium secondary battery(1) comprises a positive electrode(3) comprising the positive electrode active material, a negative electrode comprising the negative electrode active material, and an electrolyte.
