A segment for supporting electromagnetic coupling elements of a stator or rotor, e.g. windings (238 fig 19) or magnets (142 fig 4), of an electrical machine comprises in respect of the rotor, a plurality of elongate laminations 144,146 which are stacked in a first direction to form a lamination stack with elongate edges of the laminations defining opposite first and second major faces of the lamination stack. The segment comprises a plurality of elongate compression devices 138 passing internally through slots 148 in the lamination stack in the first direction and arranged to compress together the laminations in the lamination stack. Each compression member comprise a rod 169 with an anchor portion 174 at each end. The rod is passed though an enlarged portion of the lamination slots 148and then moved radially into a narrow portion, The rod is then elastically extended to allow collar spacers 176a, 178a, 176b, 178b to be inserted between the shoulder 172b and the face of the lamination stack formed by end plate 134 having open ended slots135.
