Formation of coating on surface of light metal-based substrate by plasma-electrolytic oxidation involves immersing substrate as an electrode and a counter electrode into an electrolyte, and applying sufficient electric voltage for production of spark discharge at surface of substrate. The electrolyte comprises dispersed clay particles. An independent claim is included for light metal-based substrate, which has amorphous glass-like oxide coating.
