The method involves detecting an operating condition (BZ) of a steering wheel based on steering angle acceleration (b) and a steering moment (LM) during steering retraction. A damping factor of the steering retraction is adjusted based on the detected operating condition. The operating condition is distinguished between guided and non-guided steering retractions. The damping factor is increased to a predeterminable value during the guided steering retraction, where the predeterminable value is adjusted based on driving speed of a vehicle.
