A liquefied gas of low boiling point e.g., oxygen is vaporized by passing it through an evaporator in indirect heat exchange with a stream of atmospheric air passing externally of the evaporator; the velocity of the air stream being so controlled that the temperature of the outer surface of the evaporator does not fall substantially below 0‹C. Frost deposits on the outer surface of the evaporator are thus avoided. The ratio of the surface area of the evaporator exposed to the air to that exposed to the evaporating liquefied gas is at least 10 : 1 and the direction of flow of liquefied gas is periodically reversed. |
