A method of affixing carbon dioxide onto the surface of a material is disclosed which comprises the steps of: (a) contacting a cellulosic material with a composition comprising an amino compound; (b) contacting the cellulosic material with a composition comprising a source of metal ions; and (c) contacting the cellulosic material with a composition comprising carbon dioxide. The cellulosic material may be derived from plant fibres. The amino compound may be ammonia or an amine. The source of metal ions may include alkali metal or alkaline earth metal ions. |
