An air bubble system for a ship 100 includes an air compressing arrangement 110, 300 for compressing air to generate compressed air, a plurality of air outlet ports 200 for use on an underside of a hull 120 of the ship, and an air couplingarrangement 320 for coupling the compressed air from the air compressing arrangement to the plurality of air outlet ports to generate in operation bubbles 210 therefrom. This provides a layer of bubbles over at least a portion of the hull for reducing its shear viscous resistance when the hull is propelled through water. The plurality of air outlet ports are disposed in use along a longitudinal central lower edge 130 of the hull. Each air outlet port comprises at least one plenum chamber 250 each of which has a nozzle plate 500 incorporating an array of nozzles 220 and an intermediate plate (430, Fig 5) suspended above the nozzle plate. A method of using the system is also disclosed. |
