<PICT:0688419/III/1> A metal surface is cleaned and roughened, coated with an organic pyrogenically - polymerizable material, heated to form the polymer and then heated to carbonize only the outer layer of the polymer. Specified polymerizable materials are thermosetting resins, drying oils, semi-drying oils and drying oil acids. Driers and wetting agents may also be present. The cleaning and roughening may be effected by etching with acids such as hydrochloric or nitric or by sandblasting. The coated metals may be preheated. The treatment may involve heating at 300 DEG F, then to 350 to 650 DEG F and finally to 800 to 900 DEG F or it may involve heating gradually to 650 DEG F and then rapidly to between 800 and 900 DEG F. More than one coating may be applied in which case only the internal coating need be carbonized. The heating may take place in an ordinary muffle furnace, or referring to the drawing, plates 10 on conveyer 11 are sand-blasted on both sides, coated by rollers 17 and carried by frames on conveyer 21 through the three compartments A, B, C maintained at different temperatures and discharged at the further end.
|
