<p>Disclosed is a topical anaesthetic composition formulated for use on an open wound that excludes a mucous membrane wound of alimentary and respiratory tracts and eyes comprising: about 1 to 10 weight/volume per cent of at least one anaesthetic agent having a rapid onset of action (lignocaine); at least one ingredient, for making the composition viscous and adhere to the open wound, selected from the group consisting of a hydrophilic or hydroalcoholic gelling agent, about 1 to 20 g per litre of at least one type of gum or cellulose, and a polyhydric alcohol in combination with at least one type of cellulose; an antiseptic agent (cetrimide) in an amount effective to minimise infection of the open wound; a vasoconstrictor (adrenalin); and a detectable marker (colourant or dye), wherein the composition is formulated for topical application to an open wound in a fluid form selected from the group consisting of a gel, crème, paste, emulsion and solution, and the presence of the anaesthetic agent on the wound is indicated by the detectable marker. Also disclosed is a method of using the compound for anaesthetising a non-human animal or the use of the compound in the manufacturing of a medicament for anaesthetizing. In particular the use in animal husbandry procedures such as mulesing, castration, tail docking, de-horning and branding.</p> |
