The method involves determining maximum mechanical torque value in motor mode and/or maximum mechanical torque value in generator mode according to charge of a battery (3) and speed of an electric motor. A mechanical torque value limiting a torque set point required by a driver to a maximum value and/or a mechanical torque value limiting the torque set point required by the driver to a minimal value are determined by utilizing the maximum mechanical torque value in the motor mode and/or the maximum mechanical torque value in the generator mode.
