PURPOSE: A composition containing turmerone is provided to suppress tyrosinase activation and melanogenesis and to enhance whitening effect. CONSTITUTION: A composition for skin whitening contains 0.001-50 wt% of turmerone as an active ingredient. The tumerones is aromatic turmerone((S)-2-Methyl-6-(4-methylphenyl)-2-hepten-4-one) of chemical formula 1. The composition is manufactured in the form of a solution, suspension, emulsion, paste, gel, cream, lotion, powder, soap, surfactant-containing cleansing, oil, powder foundation, emulsion foundation, wax foundation, or spray. A pharmaceutical composition and health food for skin whitening contain turmerone as an active ingredient.
