<p>The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device wherein display failures and reductions in voltage holding rates do not readily occur, even when an alignment film is not being formed. This liquid crystal display device comprises: a pair of substrates that do not substantially have an alignment film; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates and containing a liquid crystal material; and a polymer layer formed on top of the surface of the pair of substrates and controlling the alignment of liquid crystal molecules. The polymer layer is formed by the polymerization of one or more types of radical polymerizable monomers added to the liquid crystal layer and at least one of the radical polymerizable monomers is a compound that: has a structure that generates a radical by a self-cleavage reaction using light irradiation; and has two or more radical polymerizable groups.</p> |
