A round heel of a fully-fashioned stocking is knitted on a straight bar machine such that the loop transfer marks J, K caused by' the innermost transfer point during widening ocucr in substantially a single wale. This is achieved by back racking the transfer points after each transfer operation so that the number of loops transferred at each widening operation is gradually increased. As the heel is further produced the back racking may be increased so that the transfer marks extend inwardly towards the centre line of the blank. In addition, the splicing carrier stops are controlled so that the inner edges of the high splice and part of the spliced heel of the blank extend along a single wale C, D. Thereafter the stops may be adjusted so that the edges of the spliced area extend inwardly towards the centre line of the blank. The transfer marks are arranged to occur just within the edges of the spliced areas. |
