<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor element that reduces cold-shoot convergence time while improving water resistance, and to provide a gas sensor including the same. <P>SOLUTION: A gas sensor element 100 includes: a detection part 10 comprising a solid electrolyte layer 3 having a pair of electrodes 4 composed of a measurement-gas-side electrode 41 and a reference-gas-side electrode 42 provided on both sides, a porous diffusion resistance layer 2 surrounding the measurement-gas-side electrode 41 across a measurement gas space 8; a shield layer 1 forming the measurement gas space 8 together with the porous diffusion resistance layer 2, and a reference gas space protection layer 5 surrounding the reference-gas-side electrode 42 across the reference gas space 9; a heat generation part 20 stacked on the detection part 10 and having a heat generation source 6; and a porous protection layer 30 surrounding the detection part 10 and the heat generation part 20.
