The lead oxide active material for the nega. tive electrodes of storage batteries is mixed with a small proportion of a polycyclic aromatic oxidation inhibitor for lead consisting of one or more hydroxy naphthoic acids or nuclear substitution compounds or homologues thereof so that after being reduced to spongy lead they can be dried in a current of air and then exposed to the air without the lead becoming oxidized. The lead oxide may contain metallic lead and basic lead sulphate formed by the sulphuric acid used for making the paste. Usual expanders such as carbon and organic derivatives of lignin may be added. |
