Apparatus and methods of use thereof for the production of carbon-based and other nanostructures, as well as fuels and reformed products, are provided. The apparatus can also be used for fuel reforming (e.g., hydrogen or syngas generation from natural gas). In a particular embodiment, the method comprises reacting an oxidizer and a fuel in a non-premixed, multiple, inverse-diffusion-flame burner. The non-premixed, multiple, inverse-diffusion-flame burner may comprise an array of stabilized flames that form a uniform flat-flame front.
