The stitching has a central portion extending between two end portions, where the central portion comprises two leg portions that converge at an angle and intersect a break point. Each end portion extends from the respective leg portion along a path that diverges from the path of the corresponding leg portions, where the stitching exhibits high rupture strength in response to tension forces applied to interconnected portions that act on the end portions, and exhibits low rupture strength based on tension forces applied to interconnected portions that act on the break point. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle.
