Primary C8-C12 alcohols produced by the Oxo synthesis are purified from colour-forming bodies, particularly sulphur compounds, by treatment in liquid phase at 25-190 DEG C. with mercury, copper or nickel or alloys containing any of these metals. In particular, octanols and nonanols, used in preparing ester plasticizers with, e.g. phthalic, adipic or maleic p anhydride, may be treated, either prior to or after a distillation to remove lighter products such as hydrocarbons. The metal may be dispersed in the alcohol or employed as a bed, if desired on a support such as silica, alumina, corundum or carbon or fluidized. Conditions should be neutral or alkaline, and addition of caustic soda or other alkali is beneficial in particular with mercury. Treating time is generally 1-2 up to 6 hours, and the amount of metal 10-50 per cent by weight of the alcohol. A subsequent alkali or other wash prior to a final distillation may be used. Examples describe the treatment of crude or plant finished C8 or isooctyl alcohols with nickel, Raney nickel, a nickel-kieselguhr catalyst, mercury and caustic soda, copper, copper reduced by hydrogen, copper-silica gel or Devarda's metal (Al-Cu-Zu alloy) at from room temperature up to 180-190 DEG C. or reflux temperature. The products are tested by esterification to the phthalate esters in the presence of stainless steel strip and measurement of the colour developed. |
