The output of two or more optical fibres are combined with a single output. A bundle 4 of two or more input fibres, each being tapered and having a respective pedestal (i.e. an inner cladding layer placed between a core and an outer cladding layer), is spliced to an output fibre 18. The core diameter is less than the minimum mode-field diameter for that fibre.
