796,277. Continuous pulping of wood chips &c. IMPROVED MACHINERY, Inc. Jan. 25, 1957 [Jan. 26, 1956; June 29, 1956], No. 2757/57. Class 96. In continuously pulping wood chips &c., the chips, mixed with a chemical solution, e.g. in a tank 12, are pumped at 16 to the lower end of a pressurized container 22 having a safety-valve 18 and a liquid-recirculating outlet 29, and a perforated piston 32 having a central opening whereby the chips &c. may pass upwardly, the piston being e.g. of the form of a one-turn, helical screw and which may be rotated by an hydraulic motor and gearing (not shown in Fig. 1) and may be reciprocated hydraulically, e.g. with the aid of an hydraulic cylinder 50, the upward stroke being much slower than the return stroke, the chips &c. being thus compacted and advanced upwardly through the container 22, which may diverge upwardly, to a filter 28 and a discharge mechanism 26. In a modified form, the liquid and the chips are delivered separately with the aid of a rotating feed valve which discharges into the container 22 at a position intermediate of the ends of the stroke of the piston which is not helical and has no central opening. Projections on the pistonrod actuate contacts for solenoids for control of the hydraulic operation of the piston and the rotary movement of the valve.
