Class 9(2) A blasting explosive of the kind comprising a solid inorganic oxidizing salt coated with a fusible organic fuel is prepared by dispersing particles of the oxidizing salt in a stream of hot air and heating them by means of said stream to a temperature above the fusion point of the organic fuel and directing the thus heated particles in the substantial absence of said stream into and mixing them with a stream of said fusible organic fuel in molten condition. The inorganic oxidizing salt is preferably ammonium nitrate or a nitrate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal such as sodium, potassium, barium, calcium or magnesium. Specified fuels include 2.4: 6-trinitroluene, a molten dinitrotoluene, a mixture of di- and/or trinitrotoluenes solid at ordinary temperatures or paraffin wax. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a fan heating means for heating the current of air, a duct, a solidgas separator, preferably provided with a vibrator, means for the continuous supply of oxidizing salt and continuous mixing means wherein said fan permits heated air to enter said duct, the duct leading to the solid-gas separator, which in its turn leads to the mixing means. In an example, spray dried ammonium nitrate granules are fed through a vane feeder 2 acting as an air seal to a pulverizer 3 provided with a fan. The granules are carried into and through the pulverizer by a -stream of hot air which is heated by heater 4. The hot air stream carries the pulverized ammonium nitrate via pipe 5 into a cyclone separator 6 vibrated by a vibrator 7. The salt emerges through a rotary vane feeder 8 acting as an air seal into the mixing means 9 containing molten trinitrotoluene.
