<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a cubic boron nitride polycrystal having high hardness and high strength which can be produced under mild conditions without using a binder. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for producing a cubic boron nitride polycrystal, a compound composed of carbon and hydrogen or a compound composed of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen is added to cubic boron nitride powder, and treatment is performed under prescribed pressure-temperature conditions.
