FUNCTIONALIZED ISOBUTYLENE POLYMER-INORGANIC CLAY NANOCOMPOSITES AND ORGANIC-AQUEOUS EMULSION PROCESS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process of producing nanocomposites that has air barrier properties and is suitable for use as an innerliner or an innertube.

SOLUTION: The process of producing the nanocomposites includes: a step of mixing an organic solvent that comprises a polymer, preferably a halogenated elastomer with an aqueous slurry of an inorganic clay to form an emulsion comprising a polymer-clay nanocomposite; and a step of recovering the nanocomposite by precipitating the polymer-clay nanocomposite with an antisolvent.
